One of the most recent recipes that went viral on the social media sphere is lemon pasta–courtesy of Emily Mariko (yes, the same person that was behind the whole TikTok Salmon Rice bowl craze last year!).
But it’s no surprise as to why it’s been getting a lot of love. A variation of the traditional Italian dish, pasta al limone, it’s a simple recipe requiring only a handful of ingredients that can easily be found in your pantry or fridge.
Garlic Lemon Pasta with Mushroom
As a certified garlic girl, I knew I wanted to incorporate as much of the ingredient into this dish. So inspired by one of my favorite pasta dishes, Aglio E Olio, I used a lot of garlic and chili flakes in this recipe.
When it comes to adding toppings to pasta, I feel like you can never go wrong with mushrooms. However, feel free to change it up with your choice of protein by adding chicken or shrimp to your pasta!

Ingredients
- Butter
- Button mushrooms
- Olive oil
- Garlic
- Pasta: I used pappardelle, but other ones such as spaghetti, linguine, and angel hair pasta are great options as well.
- Chili flakes
- Lemon juice
- Pasta water
- Salt
- Sugar
- Parsley
- Parmesan cheese
(For full ingredient measurements, please proceed to the recipe card below.)
Instructions
- Add butter to a pan over medium heat and let it melt. Add mushroom and lightly season with salt and pepper. Sauté and let it cook until it browns (3-4 minutes) and remove from the pan.
- Boil pasta according to package instructions.
- In the same pan that you cook the mushroom, turn heat down to medium low and pour in olive oil. Add garlic and chili flakes. Let it cook and stir occasionally for at least 10 minutes until before it turns golden brown.
- Turn the heat down to low and add pasta water, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and sugar. Stir and bring to a simmer.
- Add pasta and mushrooms. Mix until well combined. Serve with a parsley and parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

Notes for Garlic Mushroom Lemon Pasta
- Adjust accordingly: Adjust the amount of garlic, chili flakes and seasoning based on your preference.
- Mushroom seasoning: Season the mushroom to taste. I seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder and dried rosemary.
- Glossy pasta: For extra glossiness, add 1 tbsp of butter and mix until it melts.

Hi there,
When does the oil go in?
Thanks!
Hi! Sorry about that, just edited the recipe. It’s added in before the garlic and chili flakes in step 3. 🙂
The 1/2 cup olive oil is not listed in the instructions anywhere. Not sure what to do with it. Also, it seems like a lot of oil!
Hi! Ahh, sorry about that. Just fixed it. The olive oil is meant to be poured in before the garlic and chili flakes in step 3. As for the amount of oil, if it’s too much you can try to start with 1/4 cup. 🙂
