Malaysian soy sauce fried eggs (telur masak kicap) plated on rice

There are days (which can be as often as you like) where you want a meal that requires minimum fuss. And that is exactly where this egg dish comes in. It takes you not more than 15 minutes to prepare from start to finish, or even faster if you can wing it!

Fried Eggs with Soy Sauce Recipe

These Malaysian-style soy sauce fried eggs, known as telur masak kicap in Malay, is a dish that can satisfy the entire family, be it adults or kids alike. You normally serve it with a side of rice for a complete and filling meal.

It’s one of my ultimate favorite comfort foods, even more so since it’s one of the easiest things to make! I grew up eating this and still have it for lunch or dinner some times.

In general, I’m not a big fan of my main course being on the sweeter side, but this somehow works wonderfully! If you’ve never tried this, I hope you do and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by this simple but hearty dish.

Malaysian soy sauce fried eggs (telur masak kicap) plated on rice

Ingredients

(For full ingredient measurements, please proceed to the recipe card below.)

  • Eggs
  • Green onion, small onion & garlic: The aromatics.
  • Fresh chili peppers (optional): Malaysians love our spice, so even in simple meals like this, you best believe we’ll add a bit of chili for that perfect bit of heat.
  • Sweet soy sauce
  • Light soy sauce
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Mix sweet soy sauce, light soy sauce and water in a bowl to make the sauce. Set aside.
  2. In a pan over medium heat, sauté onions, garlic, the white part of the green onion and the chili peppers until fragrant.
  3. Make space in the middle and break the eggs directly into the pan to fry it.
  4. When the eggs are halfway cooked, pour in the sauce and let it simmer. Continue cooking the egg to your preferred liking.
  5. Serve with white rice. Enjoy!

Notes for Malaysian-style Soy Sauce Eggs (Telur Masak Kicap)

  • Best served immediately: The eggs are best served when it’s hot because once it’s cooled down, it can turn a bit soggy from absorbing the sauce.

I’m a savory kind of girl and have always preferred my oatmeals savory. Some people think it’s weird, I say don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. The best part? You can be creative with this! I’ve added pesto to my oatmeal before and it was delicious.
I also prefer a thicker oatmeal, add more water if you don’t.
Would you try this or are you sticking to your sweet oatmeal? 😋
