Thai Fried Garlic Beef
Back in 2022, I went on a trip to Bangkok with my two best friends. It was basically a foodie extravaganza, because most of the things on our itinerary were food stops and markets.
There was one restaurant in particular–Usman Thai Muslim Food–that we enjoyed so much, we simply had to drop by again for a second time! Everything had us salivating, from their seafood tom yum, Thai Style Omelette, and even Thai Mango Sticky Rice. But the star dish that made us return was their deep fried beef with garlic.
I kept dreaming about it after, so of course I had to go again! This time with my husband in tow. We managed to squeeze in a quick getaway during our visit back to Malaysia earlier this year, and boy was it worth it!

Easy Crispy Fried Beef With Garlic
Inspired by the Thai dish, I tried to recreate it at home, and made some adjustments while testing out the recipe. For my version, I made it extra crispy because I love the added texture when I bite into it!
Thin beef slices are marinated with an aromatic garlic shallot paste as well as oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sugar, and pepper. Then, it’s coated with cornstarch and flour, before fried on low medium heat until the beef coating turns light golden brown.
This crispy fried garlic beef dish is pretty easy to make and so flavorful! You can snack on it as is (because I do that ALL the time. It’s too hard to resist!), but it’s absolutely delicious when paired with some hot rice.

how to make thai inspired crispy fried beef with garlic
Step 1: Blend garlic cloves, shallots and water in a blender or food processor until you get a paste.
Step 2: Add the thinly sliced beef into a large bowl and add the garlic shallot paste. Add the rest of the ingredients for the marinade and mix well. Set aside to marinate for at least 15 minutes.
Step 3: After marinating, add flour to the beef and mix well until each slice of beef is coated.
Step 4: Heat up oil over medium low heat and once hot enough, add a few slices of the beef making sure to spread it out instead of frying it bundled up. Fry until the outer coating of the beef turns lightly golden brown, stirring or flipping occassionally (see notes).
Step 5: Serve while hot with lime wedges and rice. Enjoy!

notes for crispy fried garlic beef
- Spread out beef slices while frying: If you don’t unfold or spread out each of the slices of beef when adding to the oil, the beef will end up being fried in a “ball” instead of longer pieces because the beef will curl up when frying.
- Crispy coating: Although the beef will cook fast, it might take awhile to get the outer coating to turn crispy and lightly golden brown on medium low heat.
- Medium low heat: Don’t be tempted to turn up the heat otherwise the beef coating will get burnt.
