Who else over here was swept up by the dalgona coffee phase almost three years ago? You could count me in on that. And I wasn’t even much of a coffee fan to begin with!

But I found that for me, reducing the intensity of the coffee was the answer to enjoying the dalgona coffee cream. So much so that I began serving the cream as a dip for fresh strawberries, or in this case, pouring it on some delicious french toast.

What Is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee drink that pairs a cream — made from instant coffee, sugar, and hot water — with your choice of milk (no matter if it’s hot or cold!). The trend originated from Korea, and the term “dalgona” was used in its name as the taste and way its made is similar to the Korean street snack “dalgona”.

This whipped coffee drink is also likened to other beverages such as the “beaten coffee” popular in India and Pakistan, or the Greek Frappe.

Hong Kong Style French Toast with Dalgona Coffee Cream

Hong Kong style french toast, known as Sai Do Si, gives a slight twist on the classic breakfast and brunch dish that so many of us love. It’s a popular dessert that’s often served during tea time in Hong Kong cafes, referred as Cha Chaan Teng (or tea restaurant).

How To Make Hong Kong Style French Toast?

Traditionally, peanut butter is spread between layers of bread, which is then dipped into an egg batter, then fried until it turns golden brown. It’s then typically drizzled with either condensed milk, maple syrup, or honey.

However, with this recipe we’ll be topping the french toast with some luscious dalgona coffee cream.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(For full ingredient measurements, please proceed to the recipe card below.)

Whipped Coffee Cream (Dalgona Coffee Cream)

  • Instant coffee: Adjust the amount based on the intensity that you prefer. Use more if you like a stronger coffee taste.
  • Sugar: I used brown sugar. But you can also try this with white sugar or coconut sugar.
  • Hot water

French Toast

  • Bread: I used Hawaiian bread. Milk and brioche bread are good options too, but you can use any type of bread.
  • Peanut butter: The traditional choice of spread for Hong Kong style french toast is peanut butter. But you can substitute and experiment with your favorite spreads as well like Nutella or Biscoff.
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Butter

How To Make Dalgona Coffee French Toast (Hong Kong Style)

Dalgona Coffee Cream

  1. Add all the ingredients in a tall glass. Whisk until you get a whipped and thicker consistency (about 40-60 seconds with an electric hand whisk – see notes).

Stuffed French Toast

  1. Spread a layer of peanut butter on 2 of the 3 slices of bread and sandwich them together. Cut the crust off the slices of bread.
  2. Make the milky egg wash by mixing the egg, milk and salt in a bowl. Dip the bread in the egg wash for a few seconds on each side.
  3. Heat up oil over medium heat and once it’s hot enough, shallow fry the bread until golden brown on each side including the sides. Remove from the pan and let it rest on a paper towel to soak up the grease.
  4. Serve on a plate and drizzle the Dalgona coffee cream on top with a bit of butter. Enjoy!

Notes for Dalgona Coffee French Toast

Dalgona coffee cream consistency

Whisk until you achieve your desired consistency. The longer you whip it, the thicker the consistency. You can use an electric hand whisk, a simple hand frother, or manually whisk by hand.

In dire situations, I’ve also tried using a fork to whisk the cream in a mug. It doesn’t give the fluffiest result, but it’s something to consider if you’re in desperate need for some dalgona coffee!

Can I airfry Hong Kong style french toast?

Yes, you can! Air fry this at 375°F for 10-15 minutes, flipping it halfway.

What to do with bread crusts

Dip the cut off crusts into the remaining egg wash and fry for french toast sticks.

What else can i pair dalgona coffee cream with?

Fruits, brownies, cookies, or even butter cakes! Give it a try and see how it goes.

📍Pizzeria Da Michele, Naples, Italy
📍 Pizzeria D’angeli, Naples, Italy
We got pizza from one of the oldest pizzerias in Naples, Italy and it didn’t disappoint. We got there right when it opened and there was already a line. We ended up getting the pizzas to-go and ate it on the hood of our rental car. Each box of pizza was only €5 and we got every item on the menu (it was only a 4 item menu anyway 😂). While waiting in line, the smell of the wood fired pizza was sooo good we were so hungry by the time we got our orders. We got pizzas from across the street too just to compare. There was no line at that restaurant and you could easily get a table. It was a little bit more expensive per pizza but still affordable. Both pizzas were delicious! Still dreaming about it till this day 🥲
Fun fact: Eat, Pray, Love was filmed at Pizzeria Da Michele!

Save and share this flavorful and delicious recipe!
Ending my Ramadan series with one of the best dishes. This is a dish that’s traditionally served during Eid/Raya in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Every family usually has their own version of this. It’s usually served with nasi impit (cubed rice), lemang or pulut kuning (turmeric glutinous rice) but also just as good with white rice.
Making this is a truly a labor of love especially when you make big batches. It can take hours! Families will cook this the night before Eid so the dish will be ready in time for the big celebration. The whole house will usually smell like rendang when this is made and honestly, one of the best smells that reminds me of such great and fond memories.
This month just flew by— thanks so much for tuning in. I’ll be back with my usual twice a week recipes starting next week 💛
