Here’s a simple recipe for some tender and juicy steak bites which can be enjoyed as a full meal or plainly as an appetizer. I love turning these bites into a main dish by having it with a side of white rice. But you can also opt to pair it with dishes like Sweet Potato Mash With Miso Butter, Air Fried Garlic Potato Wedges, or even some crispy bread!

There was a Teppanyaki place that I used to go to a lot in high school with my friends and/or family. Almost every weekend at one point, it was just THAT good. Although I haven’t been back there in awhile, I still think about the juicy delicious steak from time to time so I knew I had to recreate it at home for when that craving hits.

Steak bites are also a popular appetizer option for game nights, dinner parties, or family gatherings. Especially with kids! There have been plenty of times when sneaky little hands managed to polish off a plate full of these delicious morsels.

Teppanyaki Inspired Steak Bites

Teppanyaki is actually a Japanese cooking style where you use a flat iron griddle — known as the “teppan” — to cook food. “Yaki” means to grill, broil, or pan fry. So in Japan, anything that is cooked on a teppan, such as noodles, seafood, or meat, is called teppanyaki.

However, for an at-home cheat version, substituting with a flat iron skillet or even a frying pan would suffice.

The marinade for these steak bites is a sweet and savory teppanyaki sauce, which contains garlic, soy sauce, sugar, and pepper. In this recipe, there is no use of mirin or sake.

Ingredients

  • Strip or ribeye steak
  • Salt and pepper

Sauce

  • Butter
  • Garlic
  • Light soy sauce
  • Sugar
  • Pepper

(For full ingredient measurements, please proceed to the recipe card below.)

Instructions

  1. Season your steak with salt and pepper then cut your steak into bite sized pieces (see notes).
  2. Add 2-3 tbsp of oil into your pan and heat it up over medium high heat. Once hot enough, add your bite sized steaks into the pan and leave it to cook for 1-2 minutes before flipping it over and letting it cook for another minute before removing the steak from the pan (see notes).
  3. Turn heat down to medium low and add butter. Once the butter melts, add the rest of the sauce ingredients and stir until well combined.
  4. Add the steak bites back into the pan to absorb the sauce and finish cooking (about 1-2 more minutes).
  5. Garnish with green onions and garlic chips and serve with white rice while hot. Enjoy!

Notes for Teppanyaki Style Steak Bites

  • The bigger the cut of your steak bites, the longer it will take to cook.
  • I like my steak medium but if you prefer it differently, cook for shorter or longer based on your preference.

📍Pizzeria Da Michele, Naples, Italy
📍 Pizzeria D’angeli, Naples, Italy
We got pizza from one of the oldest pizzerias in Naples, Italy and it didn’t disappoint. We got there right when it opened and there was already a line. We ended up getting the pizzas to-go and ate it on the hood of our rental car. Each box of pizza was only €5 and we got every item on the menu (it was only a 4 item menu anyway 😂). While waiting in line, the smell of the wood fired pizza was sooo good we were so hungry by the time we got our orders. We got pizzas from across the street too just to compare. There was no line at that restaurant and you could easily get a table. It was a little bit more expensive per pizza but still affordable. Both pizzas were delicious! Still dreaming about it till this day 🥲
Fun fact: Eat, Pray, Love was filmed at Pizzeria Da Michele!

This is definitely not an authentic recipe but a simplified version that my mother-in-law makes often and now a recipe that I make quite a lot for a quick breakfast using ingredients easily accessible to us here. It definitely hits the spot! Feel free to add protein of your choice to this dish or just add a fried egg on top!

Save and share this flavorful and delicious recipe!
Ending my Ramadan series with one of the best dishes. This is a dish that’s traditionally served during Eid/Raya in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Every family usually has their own version of this. It’s usually served with nasi impit (cubed rice), lemang or pulut kuning (turmeric glutinous rice) but also just as good with white rice.
Making this is a truly a labor of love especially when you make big batches. It can take hours! Families will cook this the night before Eid so the dish will be ready in time for the big celebration. The whole house will usually smell like rendang when this is made and honestly, one of the best smells that reminds me of such great and fond memories.
This month just flew by— thanks so much for tuning in. I’ll be back with my usual twice a week recipes starting next week 💛
