Sweet vs. Savory French Toast
Are you a sweet or savory french toast fan?
Growing up, I’ve always leaned towards the savory side. Chili sauce was my favorite condiment to pair up with french toast, rather than crowd favorites like maple syrup or peanut butter.
In fact, because my family has always enjoyed french toast in a savory way, I only found out that some people indulge in the sweet versions when I was older.
Nowadays, I can eat it both ways. Though I still have a preference for the savory ones, always!

Eggy Bread With Tuna Mayo
This is an easy and delicious savory option that requires only a handful of ingredients. Be it for breakfast, brunch, or whenever you want something to snack on, this eggy bread fits it all!
Bread slices are dipped into an egg and tuna mayo mixture, before pan frying until golden perfection. I love to serve it with a side of spicy mayo or chili sauce, but you can also add on your preferred condiments.
In Malaysia, we usually make this with canned sardines (called roti sardin), but this tuna version is a great option too, in my opinion.

How To Make Tuna Egg Bread (Savory French Toast)
- In a bowl, add canned tuna, Japanese mayo, onions, chili pepper, a pinch of salt and mix. Break two eggs into the same bowl and mix until well combined.
- Take 4 slices of bread and cut diagonally.
- Over medium heat, heat up a frying pan with a bit of oil. Take each slice of bread and coat it with the mixture on both sides. Add to the pan and let it cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Cook a few at a time.
- Serve while hot with spicy mayo or chili sauce. Enjoy!

Notes For Tuna Egg Bread (Savory French Toast)
- Tuna substitute: I like to use canned sardines in tomato sauce for this too instead of tuna.
- Avoid soggy bread: Don’t leave the bread soaked in the mixture for too long or it will get too soggy and break apart, making it hard to transfer to the frying pan.
